Pikesville High School is known to have many interesting and equal opportunities that contribute to its exciting community. Not only does PHS take pride, honor, and success in its educational methods, but it also does the same within clubs that are offered. One of these said clubs is the Forensic Club, which is sponsored by Mr. Goodman.

The Forensic Club, which meets in Mr. Goodman’s room on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, is where the members practice writing speeches and debating general ways in which teens can develop their communication skills. In today’s age, the most common means of communication is through the screen, rather than talking to someone face to face, which was more common before the era of smartphones and gadgets. Although this is the case, possessing proper etiquette while speaking is still a very important skill to have, as it makes a person present themselves in a more respectable manner. In addition, many have a fear of public speaking, whether this is being in front of a large crowd or just few people. Both of these principles are developed and learned within the Forensics Club.

“I personally enjoy writing and giving speeches and I think many students would want to improve their oral communication skills,” says Mr. Goodman.

With this love for public speaking and the interest in helping students, Mr. Goodman makes it a priority to teach students how to improve their public speaking skills. The club exhibits their skills by sponsoring Black History Month, where they debate and have competitions, while also participating in Model Congress that is offered for ninth graders. Not only do they participate in debates within PHS, but the club also enters as many contests and competitions outside of school as they can to show off their skills.

“The American Legion has an oratory competition that I’m interested in having students enter. The Champions of Courage Black History month essay contest is another one,” says Mr. Goodman.

With these competitions, not only are students able to practice public speaking, but they are also able to earn scholarship money if they win.  Another benefit is that this club is not exclusive. Age, gender, ethnicity, etc. do not prohibit a person from joining the club. If you are a student that struggles with public speaking and communication skills, the Forensics Club is a perfect opportunity for you to learn and increase your public speaking skill.

“We get to loosen up and build relationships that I might otherwise not be able to do inside of class. I also get to meet new students that I do not teach,” states Mr. Goodman.

Not only is this club a perfect opportunity to learn more about public speaking and improve your skills, but it is also a place where one can build new friendships. If you are not into sports or are a more introverted character, this club can be the gateway to meeting new people and building a more confident character through improving your social skills and learning how to properly speak in front of people while being comfortable with doing so.

Forensic Club is welcome to anyone who is interested in joining and is currently looking for more people to join and learn new skills. According to Mr. Goodman, the Forensics Club is looking to expand and hopes to have more than 100 students attend the meetings. Do not be afraid to meet in room 207 to join in on the fun of Forensic Club.
